The vast majority of refugees in Europe fled from conflict in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Migrants are fleeing persecution and human rights violations in these regions.
In 2015, the majority of all European refugees arrived from Syria. The World Health Organization has studied the impacts of the nation’s gruesome civil war. The conflict has become the number one cause of death in the country. Nearly 79,000 civilians were killed in the conflict between mid-2011 and early 2015 alone.
Sadly, women and children are particularly impacted by this violence. In fact, women and children were two to three times more likely to be killed by air raids than men. Women and children also experience higher mortality in chemical weapons attacks and suicide bombs.
